LGBTQ

"I can't live the rest of my life in her closet. If she can't come out to her family ... I think I'll have to end this relationship."

"...If only my uncle could have come out back then — at least to me. Knowing he was gay would have helped me. I had no one."

“...When they told me they’ve decided to take the next step and transition … I was surprised at how it affected me. I want to be supportive, but I’m also scared.”

For over two decades, I’ve been helping LGBTQ folk to recover or discover their essential selves, and to live the lives that feel right and true to them. A “non-native” of the community, I've been a committed ally (as a gay-affirmative therapist, a political being, a social worker, and as a human) for as long as I can remember.

Since I began serving the LGBTQ community in the ‘90’s, there’s been so much change; as the freedom to be out and be oneself broadens from one century to the next, one decade to the next, the art of living itself becomes more complex. Having more options to live as your true self means … doing the work of discovering who that self truly is.

And while some things change, others remain the same: homophobia (internal and external), heterocentrism, the emotional and bodily experience of growing up gay or gender nonconforming, coming out. And the continuing impact of HIV on individuals, partners, families, and our world.

In a word, my work is LGBTQ-affirmative, and so am I.
